How Our Students Prepare for CLAT with Mentorship, Mocks and Strategy
By Victus Law Academy
I still remember the call that changed how I think about CLAT preparation. It was 10:30 PM on a Sunday. A student named Karthik from our online CLAT coaching batch called me, his voice shaky.
“Sir, I just took my mock test. Scored 65 again. Same as last week. I’ve been studying for six months, and I’m not moving. What am I doing wrong?”
I asked him one question: “After your mock last week, what did you analyze? What specific mistakes did you identify? What did you change in your preparation?”
Silence. Then, quietly: “I just looked at the score and moved on.”
That was the problem. Karthik thought preparation meant studying hard and taking tests. He didn’t realize that tests are useless without analysis. That strategy matters more than hours. That a mentor who sees what you cannot see is worth a thousand books.
Karthik’s story is not unique. Thousands of CLAT aspirants study hard but stay stuck. They take mocks, see the same scores, and wonder why they aren’t improving. The answer is simple: Hard work without the right system is wasted effort.
At Victus Law Academy, we have built a system. It has three pillars: Mentorship, Mocks, and Strategy. Together, they turn average students into rank holders. Today, I am going to show you exactly how it works.
The Problem: Why Smart Students Stay Stuck
Before we talk about solutions, let’s understand the problem.
Most CLAT preparation looks like this:
Student joins CLAT classes
Attends lectures, takes notes
Studies at home
Takes a mock test
Looks at the score
Feels happy or sad
Repeats
Notice what is missing? Analysis. Feedback. Course correction.
Without these, you are just running on a treadmill. You are moving, but you are not going anywhere. You keep making the same mistakes because no one tells you what they are. You keep spending too much time on certain questions because no one points it out. You keep getting stuck on Legal Reasoning passages because no one shows you a better way to read them.
This is where the Victus system comes in.
The Victus System: Three Pillars of Success
Our entire approach to CLAT coaching in Chennai (and online across Tamil Nadu) is built on three interconnected pillars. Remove any one, and the structure collapses.
Pillar 1: Personal Mentorship (Your North Star)
Mentorship is the heart of our system. It is the difference between being a face in a crowd and being a name someone cares about.
What Mentorship Looks Like at Victus
From day one, every student is assigned a personal mentor. This is not a random counselor. This is an experienced educator—often an NLU graduate themselves—who stays with you throughout your journey .
Your mentor does three things:
Tracks Your Performance: They don’t just look at your mock scores. They dive deep. Which question types are you getting wrong? Are you slow in Legal Reasoning? Do you make silly mistakes in Quant? They see patterns you cannot see .
Provides 1-to-1 Guidance: Every month, you have a dedicated one-on-one session with your mentor. Not a group session. Not a generic lecture. Just you and them, discussing your progress, your struggles, your next steps .
Keeps You Motivated: CLAT preparation is an emotional rollercoaster. There will be weeks when scores drop. There will be days when you want to quit. Your mentor is your anchor. They remind you why you started. They show you how far you have come. They push you when you need pushing and comfort you when you need comfort .
“I was stuck at 70 for months. My mentor sat with me, reviewed my last 10 mocks, and pointed out that I was spending too much time on one particular type of logical reasoning question. We practiced 50 of those together. Next mock, I scored 85.” — Priya, NLU Hyderabad
Pillar 2: High-Quality Mocks (The Mirror)
Mocks are not just practice. They are a mirror reflecting your preparation. But only if they are the right kind of mocks, analyzed the right way.
What Makes Our Mocks Different
1. Exam-Like Difficulty and Pattern:
Our mock tests are designed to mirror the actual CLAT exam. Not easier. Not harder. Exactly the same difficulty, the same passage lengths, the same question distribution . When our students sit for the real CLAT, they feel like they are taking just another Victus mock.
2. Comprehensive Coverage:
We offer over 70 full-length mocks and 190+ sectional tests throughout the course . You practice every topic, every question type, until mastery is automatic.
3. Detailed Analytics (The Real Gold):
After every mock, you receive a detailed analysis report showing:
Your overall rank and percentile
Section-wise accuracy and time spent
Question-type breakdown (e.g., how you did on “strengthen” questions vs “assumption” questions in Logical Reasoning)
Comparison with toppers (how much time did they spend on each section?)
Personalized recommendations for improvement
This is not just data. It is a roadmap. It tells you exactly what to work on next.
4. Mentor-Led Review:
Here is the step most students miss. After every major mock, you review it with your mentor. Not just “oh I got this wrong.” Deep analysis. Why did you choose the wrong answer? What was your thought process? What should you have done differently? .
“I used to think mock tests were just for practice. At Victus, I learned they are for learning. My mentor showed me that I kept getting ‘inference’ questions wrong because I was reading too much into the passage. Once I fixed that, my scores jumped.” — Arjun, NLSIU Bangalore
Pillar 3: Strategic Test-Taking (The Game Plan)
You can know all the concepts in the world. If you don’t have a strategy for test day, you will underperform. Strategy is what separates good scorers from great ones.
What Strategy Looks Like
1. Section Order:
Should you attempt Legal Reasoning first? Or English? It depends on you. Some students warm up better with reading passages. Others need to dive into legal logic immediately. Your mentor helps you figure out your optimal section order and practices it until it becomes automatic .
2. Question Selection:
Not all questions are created equal. In every section, there are easy questions, medium questions, and hard questions. Wasting time on a hard question means losing marks on three easy ones later. We teach you to identify, at a glance, which questions to attempt now, which to mark for review, and which to leave .
3. Time Management:
CLAT gives you 120 minutes for 120 questions. That is exactly one minute per question on average. But Legal Reasoning passages take longer to read. Quant questions can be solved faster. You need a per-section time budget. We help you create one and stick to it through practice .
4. Stress Management:
Test day nerves are real. Your heart races. Your mind blanks. We train you to handle this. Through repeated mock tests under exam conditions, the real thing feels familiar. You have been here before, a dozen times. Your body knows what to do .
“In my first mock, I panicked halfway through and rushed through the last section. By my 20th mock, I was calm. I had a plan. I knew exactly when to speed up and when to slow down. On CLAT day, I felt like I was at home.” — Divya, NLU Jodhpur
How the Three Pillars Work Together
Mentorship, Mocks, and Strategy are not separate activities. They are a continuous cycle.
You learn concepts in CLAT classes (online or offline).
You practice with sectional tests.
You take a full-length mock under exam conditions.
You receive detailed analytics showing your strengths and weaknesses.
You meet your mentor to review the mock and adjust your strategy.
You update your personalized study plan based on the analysis.
Repeat.
With every cycle, you improve. Your weak areas shrink. Your confidence grows. You move from “hoping to crack CLAT” to “knowing you will.”
A Typical Week at Victus
Wondering what this looks like in practice? Here is a snapshot of a student’s week.
| Day | Activity | Purpose |
|---|---|---|
| Monday | Live class (Legal Reasoning) | Learn new concepts |
| Tuesday | Live class (English + Current Affairs) | Learn + practice |
| Wednesday | Sectional test (Logical Reasoning) + self-analysis | Targeted practice |
| Thursday | Live class (Quantitative Techniques) + doubt session | Clarify concepts |
| Friday | Revision of week’s topics + Current Affairs notes | Consolidation |
| Saturday | Full-length mock test (exam conditions) | Simulate real exam |
| Sunday | Mentor review session + plan for next week | Feedback + strategy |
This is not random. Every day has a purpose. Every activity builds on the last.
Why This System Works for Tamil Nadu Students
Tamil Nadu students face unique challenges. Our State Board system emphasizes memorization. CLAT demands analytical thinking. This gap confuses many aspirants .
Our mentorship model bridges this gap. Your mentor understands this transition because many of our mentors are from Tamil Nadu and have made the same journey themselves . They know exactly where you will struggle and how to help you through it.
Whether you join our classroom program in Chennai or our online CLAT coaching from anywhere in the state, you get the same system, the same mentors, the same support.
Beyond the Exam: Building Lawyers, Not Just Rankers
Here is something we believe deeply: CLAT is a means, not an end. The goal is not just to get into an NLU. The goal is to become a great lawyer.
That is why our approach goes beyond exam tricks. We focus on building the skills you will need in law school and beyond:
Analytical thinking
Clear communication
Ethical reasoning
Resilience and discipline
These are not just CLAT skills. They are life skills. And they are built through mentorship, practice, and reflection—the same three pillars.
What Our Students Say
“The 1-to-1 mentorship at Victus is unlike anything I’ve experienced. My mentor didn’t just check my scores. She asked about my mental state, my confidence, my fears. She helped me believe in myself. That belief was half the battle.” — Karthik (the student from the beginning of this article), now at NLU Delhi
“I joined Victus for the mocks. I stayed for the strategy. Learning how to take the test was as important as learning what was in the test. On exam day, I had a plan. I knew exactly what to do.” — Lakshmi, NLSIU Bangalore
“As someone from a small town, I thought I’d never get the same quality as Chennai students. Victus online changed that. Same faculty. Same mocks. Same mentorship. I never felt like I was at a disadvantage.” — Suresh, NLU Trichy
